Building Type: Hurricane rated classrooms, library, sports facilities, kitchens, landscaping, access road and parking.
Project Overview: Provision
of a 300 student primary school which also functions as a hurricane
shelter for 800+ people when required. The project was constructed on a
greenfield site, requiring 45,000 cubic yards of imported fill. The
buildind sits on strip footings and its own 10,000 gallon fresh water
cistern. Built of concrete block, with cast concrete roofs and backup
power, water and cooling facilities the school is compleyely self
contained during any storms. Sports facilities included a full size
astro turf soccer pitch and baseball court.
Challenges / Issues: The
contract required the works to be completed the for the start of
the school year, which demanded an agressive construction schedule.
Additionally the building contained elaborate life-safety systems in
order to perform its duel role.
Contract Value: US$10.2 m
Initial Completion Date: 48 week construction schedule. The project was opened on schedule for the 2004-2005 academic year.
Estimate Methodology: Negotiated with the Cayman Islands Government.
Package Strategy:
The majority of the works were carried out by high quality local
sub-contractors with materials procurred both locally and through Miami.
