Project Name: Providenciales Ballpark and Grandstand, Turks and Caicos. Client:
The Government of the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Delivery Methodology:
Design and Build in line with a FIDIC form of contract.
Project Overview:
The project required the site clearnce of an area of swampy salina in the middle of the downtown area of Providenciales and the creation of a state of the art sporting facility.
The workscope included an astroturf multiuse playing area, which is used for a wide range of ball sports and athletic events, the erection of a 2000 seat capacity all weather grandstand structure with integrated changing rooms, toilet facilities and concession stands. The whole of the ballpark area has also been illuminated with floodlights to a standard that will facilitate TV coverage of all sporting events to internationally accepted standards. Challenges:
The contract was awarded on the basis of an extremely agressive construction schedule. In order to meet the agreed delivery dates Johston Internationa limited worked very closely with the Client. The site clearance and bulk earthworks were set up as a early works package ahead of the main contract works. The design was driven by the challanging construction schedule with the superstructure for the grandstand being detailed as a structural steelwork package and let several days after the award of contract. This allowed the changing rooms and concession area to be constructed as a parallel activity to the fabrication of the structural steelwork. The bleacher package was detailed in aluminium and again was able to run in parallel with the works on site.
Contract Value:
US $3.5m
Construction Schedule:
The initial advanced works package started on 27 March 2004 and was completed within 4 weeks. The main contract foundation works started on the 1 May 2005 and the project was handed over to the TCI Government at a ceremony held on the ballpark on the 11 December 2004.
Directly negotiated the Government of The Turks and Caicos Islands.
Package Strategy:
In order tocomply with the challanging construction schedule major packges of works were designed so that theycould be procured offshore, allowing fabrication activity to run in parllel with the site constrution activities. All civil, building and services installation works were sub-contracted to Johnston International Limited proven trade contractors.
