Project Overview:

This residential land sub-division project required the construction of  over a mile of marine canals, a bridge, roadworks, utilities installations and the dredge of a marine approach channel for the canals together with the navigation markers required by the Turks and Caicos Island Marine Department.

Challenges:

The project required the excavation of 230,000 cubic yards of limestone rock of varying hardness to form the canals. The canals were excavated to a minimum depth of 9 feet below mean sea level. 100% of the excavtion works were carried out under water. During the dredging operations extreme care was taken using turbidity curtains to ensure that the dredging operations worked within the agreed guidelines as set by the Turks and Caicos Islands Government Departmnt of Environmental and Coastal Resources.

Contract Value:

US $2.3m

Construction Schedule:

The commencement date for the contract was 4 February 2002 and the contract duration was 8 months. The contract was completed one month ahead of schedule.

Estimate Methodology:

The contract was directly negotiated with the client on an open book basis.

Package Strategy:

The excavation and dredging packages were let to specilist trade contractors from the US. The bridge construction, utilities installation and the slope protection works were secured with local sub-contractors.
